SIGIRIYA

 

 

                   Sigiriya is an ancient rock forest located in the Matale  district near Dambulla town in the central province. the name refers to a site of historical and archaeological significance that is dominated byna massive column of rock nearly two hundred meters hight .accoding to the ancient sri lankan chronice,the culawamsa, this site was selected by king kashypa as his new capital.

                    He built his place on top of the rock and decorated its side with sides with colourful frescoes . on a small plateau about halfway up the site side of this rock he built a gateway in the form of enormous lion.d right from this structure deright from this this structure- sinhagiri ,  The lion rock.the capital and the royal place was abandoned after the kinds death.it was used as a buddhist monastery until the fourth century.Sigiriya  today is UNESCO world heritage site.it is one of the preserved exhibits of ancient urban planning .,
